• Waxing FAQ!

How long does my hair need to be?

Your hair needs to be about the length of a grain of rice for the wax to be able to pick it up, which usually means letting it grow out after shaving for 2-3 weeks. This might seem like a long time if you're used to shaving regularly, but having your hair be grown out will lead to a much more consistent and smooth waxing result your first time!

    Will my first wax hurt?

It's different for everyone, but typically yes. Usually the first wax is the spiciest with successive waxes getting easier. The first time you get waxed your hair has never been removed by the root before and has developed a thick, protective root sheath which is what makes it more painful to remove. The good news is, if you decide to stay consistent, your hair tends to grow back finer and more sparsely which makes waxing less painful. We also get to know each other so hopefully you feel more relaxed and comfortable when you come in! Most of my newbies tell me that even though it hurt it wasn't nearly as bad as they thought it was going to be in their head, and are surprised by how much easier it is when they come back for the second time. That being said, we all have a different pain tolerance and if it's just too much for you there's never any pressure to continue the service or book another one.

Can I get waxed on my period?

Yes! As long as you can wear a tampon or a cup to your appointment you are welcome to get waxed during your cycle.

Should I do anything before I get waxed?

It's best to arrive at your wax appointment hydrated and with clean, bare skin. You don't have to do anything before your appointment, but if you'd like to get on an exfoliating and moisturizing routine (see below) before your first appointment that will set you up for the best possible results.

Do I have to wax *everything* for my brazilian?

No :) You can wax whatever you want or don't want. Many people like to leave a triangle, landing strip, or most of the top with just the sides cleaned up. Others prefer a deep bikini wax but no labia. I also have an option for just the bikini line and/or booty strip on my booking site.

Can I get waxed if I'm pregnant?

Yes! As long as you don't have any skin conditions or contraindications noted by your care provider waxing is perfectly safe during pregnancy. Many people appreciate a fresh wax a few days to a week before their due date for a more comfortable delivery and recovery period.

Is there anything I should avoid after my wax?

For 24-48 hours after your wax you will want to avoid sex, hot baths or hot tubs, saunas/steamrooms, swimming, heavy workouts like running and weight lifting, heavy sweating, and tight clothing. You are free to take a shower but I would suggest avoiding soap directly onto the waxed area and keeping the water warm but not scalding hot. The goal is to bring down inflammation to accelerate healing instead of adding to it. After a wax all of our hair follicles are exposed which makes it easy for bacteria to get in, especially in a warm and damp environment. Keep it clean and dry, wear loose fitting clothing, and avoid excess heat and friction when possible. Bacterial growth manifests as small, pimple like white bumps on the area that's been waxed, called folliculitis. This will usually clear up on it's own, but it can be awkward and uncomfortable in the moment!

    What aftercare do you recommend?

A simple and gentle exfoliating and moisturizing routine. I suggest starting with a pair of exfoliating gloves or mitts and using those daily in the shower with your body wash after the recovery window has ended. When you get out of the shower moisturize with an after wax oil, or a substitute like plain jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, or almond oil. Coconut oil and heavy creams may be too pore clogging so I don't typically recommend those.

Exfoliation will help to slough off dead skin, sweat, dirt, and build up while moisturizing will keep our skin lubricated so that as the hair grows back it can more easily break through the surface of the skin instead of getting trapped underneath (ingrown). It also creates a less itchy and irritating regrowth period and conditions your skin beautifully for future waxing. The more consistent you are with your aftercare routine the better your wax results will be.

Im doing my aftercare, why do I still have ingrowns?

Ingrowns are normal. Hormones (including pregnancy and conditions such as Endo + PCOS), genetics, and lifestyle (gym life, tight restrictive clothing, etc.), all play a role in how our bodies respond to hair removal. While many people experience fewer ingrowns when following a consistent waxing and aftercare routine, some people may still have issues with ingrowns.

If you feel like you're doing everything right and still getting ingrowns it could be worth switching your body wash to something unscented with less synthetic ingredients. Bar soaps, including Dove, can be a big culprit for ingrowns because they leave a film behind on the skin. Also consider switching to cotton undies and making sure you follow good hygeine practices after sex and exercising. I have a few stronger exfoliation options as well that can help. I try to stick to a less-is-more approach whenever possible. So instead of freaking out and trying 100 different products in the same week, it can often be more productive to focus on the lifestyle changes we can make to support our body instead.

Why do I have stubble after my wax?

Most likely some of the hair wasn't long enough for the wax to pick up. When we're transitioning from shaving to waxing our hair is growing at many diffent speeds and it can take 3-6 waxes for all the growth to sync up. Skin that's very dry or dehydrated or hasnt been exfoliated regularly can also contribute to stubborn hair that may not pull out as easily, so make sure you're doing your aftercare and keeping your body hydrated before your appointment!

I can't find any availability on your site!

I see over 100 clients a month and unfortunately I have limited availability, especially during my pregnancy and maternity leave. In order to secure a spot it's recommended to pre-book your next wax a month ahead of time. If you don't see availability on the day you were hoping for please join the waitlist and I will reach out if I can fit you in. You might have to look further ahead to find a spot! Last minute requests and appointments with multiple services can be tricky to accommodate. Thank you for understanding!
